On July 25, 2010, Enbridge’s Lakehead pipeline ruptured near Marshall releasing crude oil into a nearby wetland. More than 840,000 gallons of oil flowed down Talmadge Creek, which flows into the Kalamazoo River. The oil rupture and spill activities harmed fish, wildlife and other natural areas. All major remediation and restoration activities were completed within three to five years of the spill. These activities included shoreline stabilization, planting of native species and the removal of Ceresco Dam.
Gun Lake Tribe produced a short film with Selu Productions about the Kalamazoo River oil called Zibi Yajdan, the River Tells It. For more information on the restoration and recovery of the Kalamazoo River, visit “The River of Recent Return”
