The Kent County Health Department has officially confirmed their first case of Measles in Kent County, making this the second case of Measles in Michigan this year. Due to the close proximity of GLT HHS to Kent County, we are encouraging patients and community members to reach out to their primary care providers to review their MMR (Measels, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccination status. GLT HHS has the MMR vaccine available and encourages you to reach out to a nurse to review your records and schedule a vaccine if needed. Let’s work together and increase our immunity for our community! GLT HHS: 269.397.1760 option 1.

Measles is a very serious and contagious disease. It is much more than “just a rash,” especially in children under 5 years old, immunocompromised individuals and the elderly.

Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The droplets containing the virus hang in the air and others breathe them in. You can get measles just by being in a room where a person with measles has been, even up to two hours after that person has left.

When one person is infected with measles, 9 out of 10 people nearby will become infected if not protected with vaccination!

Measles symptoms appear 1-2 weeks after exposure and consist of high fever, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes and a typical measles rash. Complications include ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, encephalitis and death. Measles can be spread for up to four days before the rash appears.

Anyone who is not protected from measles is at risk. After two vaccinations, normally given between 12-15 months of age and 4-6 years old, your risk of getting measles if exposed drops to less than 3%! That is how effective the MMR vaccination is! Most people who are vaccinated with MMR will be protected for life.
Let’s work together to stop the spread of measles again!
The MMR vaccine is offered at GLTHC. If you have never received this vaccine, please come in to be vaccinated! Call 269.397.1760
